The Department of Cardiology is amongst the most dynamic departments of KMCT Medical College and popularly known as KMCT Heart Institute and Research Centre (KHIRC). KHIRC has been providing expert cardiac services comparable to international standards since 2011.

Since inception it has provided the highest standards of medical and interventional excellence at the most affordable rate s to the public in and around Calicut, Wayanadu, Vadakara, Kannur and Malappuram districts of Malabar region of Kerala.

With its expert team of cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons, cardiac anesthetists and physicians KHIRC follows the “HEART TEAM” concept, whereby each detail of the patient is collectively discussed amongst the team before allocating them to medical, interventional or surgical management.

 INTERVENTIONAL CARDIO-VASCULAR DEPARTMENT

KHIRC provides 24 hour critical care and interventional support and is the top institute for primary emergency angioplasty in the Mukkam area of Calicut. The department is managed by two expertly trained interventional cardiologists

Each of our interventional cardiologist performs around 900 to 1000 interventional cases per year which includes a wide range of procedures such as diagnostic coronary and peripheral angiograms, coronary and peripheral vascular angioplasties, pacemaker procedures, vascular embolization procedures, venous interventions, balloon mitral valvuloplasty, balloon aortic valvuloplasty; ASD, VSD and PDA device closures, carotid and renal artery interventions. All range of complex coronary interventions are managed such as Left main coronary artery interventions, Post CABG graft interventions, CTO interventions, rotablation and bifurcation coronary lesions. IABP back up is available for extremely sick or high risk patients and adhoc coronary imaging such as FFR, IVUS and OCT are used when necessary. Diagnostic and therapeutic electrophysiological procedures are conducted as workshops as per patient demand.

In November 2017 KHIRC created a historical landmark when they successfully completed their first Transcutaneous Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) in a 74 year old gentleman; making it the first medical college in entire Malabar area of Kerala to have done so. This achievement enrolled KHIRC among one of the few centers who conducted TAVI in India.

KHIRC is actively pursuing research in the fields of interventional cardiology, heart failure and coronary artery diseases. KHIRC also provides regular camp services to those in need, in and around Calicut.
