A fully automated 24×7 air conditioned, Hematology and clinical pathology laboratory in the hospital wing is supervised by the department of pathology and receives a total of 40,000 blood samples and 45,000 clinical pathology specimens monthly. Bone marrow aspiration and biopsy are also performed and processed routinely. A fully functioning blood bank is available with facilities for component separation and modern screening facilities including HIV, HbsAg, HCV and syphilis. The blood bank also caters to peripheral hospitals.

The aim of the department is to expose the undergraduate MBBS students to the basic concepts about various human diseases both theoretically and practically. The students have regular lecture and practical hours along with symposiums. Journal clubs are presented by the department faculty. Clinicopathologic conferences involving other clinical specialities are also conducted. Faculty members actively participate in regional and national CME programmes conducted in other academic institutions. Presently, the department is actively involved in research in the following three topics – “The Histopathological spectrum of Papillary carcinoma, thyroid, a 3 year study”, “The spectrum of breast lesions and cytohistopathological correlation, a retrospective study” and “Cytohistopathological correlation of various thyroid lesions and evaluation of Bethesda system for reporting thyroid cytopathology, a 3 year study”. The Museum of Pathology department displays a total of 300 gross mounted specimens and is open from 9 am to 5 pm for the students.
