ACTIVITIES OF THE DEPARTMENT

Academic activities: Department caters to the students of the following courses: MBBS, BDS, BPT,
BSc Perfusion Technology, Optometry, BCVT and MD (Pharmacology). The department follows the
Competency based medical education curriculum for MBBS and MD training. With innovative
teaching-learning methodologies that include student-centred approach and simulation-based learning,
the department aims to inculcate scientific spirit and professionalism among students to work towards
achieving patient safety.  With an aim to make medical learning more intriguing and participative, the
department regularly organizes problem-based learning sessions, quizzes, debates, exhibitions, student
seminars, museum, and library studies. These interactive sessions not only enhance the understanding
of the subject but also foster critical thinking and communication skills among the students.
Department also offers electives in Pharmacovigilance, Materiovigilance, FDC, Pharmacoeconomics
and Research to MBBS students. Teaching Attitude ethics and communication and training in
management of pandemics is the additional role catered by the department. Felicitating the university
toppers in the subject is included under the best practices of the department.

Mentor-Mentee Program: Recognizing the importance of personalized guidance in the educational
journey, the department has introduced a mentor-mentee program specifically for undergraduate
medical students. This program pairs experienced faculty members with students, allowing for
individualized attention, guidance, and support. It not only aids in academic achievement but also
fosters professional growth, ethics, and the overall development of the students.

Pharmacovigilance: The department has been actively involved in pharmacovigilance, which
involves the monitoring of drug safety post-approval. The department houses the Adverse Drug
Reaction Monitoring Centre which functions under Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission, the National
Coordinating Centre for pharmacovigilance. The AMC collects adverse drug reactions (ADR)
encountered at KMCT hospital and nearby hospitals, performs causality assessment of collected
ADRs and reports them to NCC via Vigiflow software. The department regularly participates in
various national programs like National Pharmacovigilance Week, Med safety week and Antibiotic
resistance awareness program etc.

Research: The department engages in robust research projects by faculty and post graduate students.
Recently under electives, undergraduate students are also included in department research. The areas
of research include, Pharmacotherapeutics, Pharmacovigilance, Drug utilisation studies,
Pharmacoeconomics, BA-BE studies, medical education etc.

Training programs: The department organizes regular orientation sessions for interns and
postgraduate students regarding rational drug use, pharmacovigilance and antibiotic resistance.

Understanding the pivotal role of nurses and paramedics in patient care, the department organizes
regular training sessions for them. These training programs emphasize medication safety, ensuring
that patients receive the best care possible with minimized risks.

Community Outreach programs: The Department engages in Community outreach programs
conducted at various health centres and at the community level to spread awareness about drug safety
and the importance of reporting adverse drug reactions.

Participation in College committees: The faculty of the department play important roles in Medical
Education Unit, Curriculum Committee, Research Committee, Institutional Ethics Committee,
Pharmacovigilance committee, Anti-ragging committee etc.

     2 Demonstration rooms with a seating capacity of 50 students each and fitted with audiovisual
    aids.
     Clinical Pharmacology lab equipped with mannequins & other instruments for skill training.
     Computer assisted learning lab with 25 computers and Ex-Pharm simulation software.
     Research lab equipped with modern instruments for postgraduate training and research.
     Museum with more than 400 exhibits.
